Maria Martinez
BV Derm Medical Assistant Success Story
Maria is a student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Midland TX. Texas Tech is a 27-month, Master’s degree program, in West Texas. Their focus is rural medicine.
What is the most important thing you learned during your time as a MA? I have learned how PAs can interact with their supervising physician and colleagues. In my previous dermatology job, I worked closely with an MD Mohs surgeon, and my interactions with PAs were minimal. Working at BV Derm has allowed me to work directly with PAs and observe the MD and PA relationship. The PAs support Dr. Gallagher in Mohs during stages and closures just as much as he supports them. It has also been interesting to see the level of autonomy PAs can have, especially in dermatology, a field I see myself pursuing.
What made you want to go back to school at this point in your life? It has always been one of my goals to seek higher education. When I was in undergrad, I was indecisive between MD and PA, but ultimately chose PA.
Why did you choose to be a Physician Assistant? I chose PA school over MD school for several reasons. PA school is shorter, which fits better with my other life goals. It is also less expensive than medical school, which means I will need to take out fewer student loans, helping me reach financial independence sooner. Lastly, the ability to change specialties stands out the most about the PA profession. As an MA, I have worked in primary care, urgent care, and dermatology. There are things I like and dislike about each of them. It is important for me to know that if I change my mind, I can go into another specialty and forever like what I do.
What did you learn from the team at BV Derm? I learned how to form part of a team. In my previous dermatology job, it was just me, there was no team. I was used to doing everything on my own. Here, there is this unspoken rule: if you are tied up with a patient, someone else will room your next patient. It is very collaborative.
What are your hobbies and passions outside of school? When not preparing for PA school or working, I enjoy playing pickleball, learning to ski, reading, and spending time with my Siberian Husky and family.
