Epidermal Inclusion Cysts

An article to share from Mary Katherine Hill, MD.

“Epidermal Inclusion Cysts”

Epidermal inclusion cysts, sometimes also known as sebaceous cysts, typically form when the skin’s surface becomes blocked, trapping keratin and other substances beneath the skin. While usually harmless, these cysts can become inflamed, leading to pain and discomfort.

Treatment options for epidermal inclusion cysts vary depending on the severity and symptoms. For asymptomatic cysts, observation may be sufficient. However, if the cyst becomes inflamed, medical intervention may be necessary. This may involve injection of steroids and/or a course of oral antibiotics. In cases of recurrent or persistent symptoms, complete surgical excision of the cyst and its surrounding capsule may be recommended for definitive removal.

Since these cysts typically develop spontaneously, complete prevention is often not possible. Regular skin examination and prompt medical attention for any changes or symptoms can help in early detection and management.
