Folliculitis

An article to share from Alanna Thomas, PA-C

Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Hair follicles are tiny pockets in the skin from which hair grows. When these follicles get irritated, usually by bacteria, fungi, or other factors, it can lead to folliculitis.

Symptoms of folliculitis can vary but common presentations include: red or white filled bumps, itching or burning skin, or some tenderness. Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body where hair follicles are present, but it’s most common on areas where there’s friction or irritation, such as the face, scalp, neck, thighs, buttocks, or areas covered by tight clothing. Factors that can contribute to folliculitis developing include: bacterial or fungal infection, friction either from clothing or shaving, blocked follicles, and excessive sweating.

Treatment for this includes avoiding irritants or provoking factors and ensuring razor blades are clean and changed out regularly. Maintaining good hygiene and using over the counter cleansers such as benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine can help improve folliculitis. Warm compresses can aid in soothing any discomfort. Often, folliculitis can self resolve but some cases may require dermatology evaluation and even prescription medication to aid in resolution.
