Hair Loss

We typically shed hair daily at a slow and constant rate that is matched by the rate at which we grow new hairs.  A change in this balance that causes excessive, sudden, or continuous hair loss can have many different causes.  The two most common causes are androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.

Alopecia Areata is hair loss caused by an autoimmune disease, most commonly presenting with isolated round patches of hair loss.

Androgenetic alopecia is patterned hair loss that is genetically determined.  In many cases, there is a family history of hair loss, while in other cases, there is no family history.

Symptoms

Androgenetic hair loss most commonly occurs gradually in a well-defined pattern.  In men, androgenetic alopecia typically incudes recession of the hairline at the temples and a "bald spot" at the crown of the head.  In women, androgenetic alopecia classically involved diffuse thinning over the entire scalp.  The severity of hair loss varies person to person
